Revitalization of Community School Ulakwo

The St. Joseph’s Community School is the primary elementary school that serviced the town of Ulakwo, (and surrounding towns) in central Imo State Nigeria. It was established in the early 1900s as St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School, and therefore is the fountainhead of education for generations of children in Ulakwo and environs.

Even though the buildings survived the Nigeria/Biafra civil war (1967-1970), they all sustained major damages that were never repaired. As a result of subsequent years of neglect, the infrastructure is in such disrepair that the classrooms are without windows and doors, the floors are dust-bowls, there are no desks or chairs for teachers or students, the walls are painted with charcoal to serve as black boards.

The current project, therefore, seeks to start refurbishing these buildings to provide a safer/healthier academic learning environment for pupils at this elementary school.
